SOS Enhances Online Backup Solution for Business To Meet SMB’s Growing Data Protection Needs

Multi-destination, multi-schedule backup expands on unlimited versioning, free integrated local backup, physical media upload and other unique features

Los Angeles, CALIFORNIA – March 9, 2010 – Taking steps to address the increasingly critical data protection needs of small businesses, SOS Online Backup, a global leader in online backup technology, today announced enhancements to SOS Universal Backup™ with LiveProtect™, which enables small businesses to back up data across multiple destinations at multiple times.

By backing up data to ten global datacenters, SOS enables SMBs to backup their entire network -- from their Microsoft Outlook to their financial documents. SOS Universal Backup with LiveProtect™, enables SMBs to monitor their files, and be assured of continuous real-time data protection. SOS backs up the data offsite automatically, keeping an unlimited version history giving SMB owners the ability to roll-back at any time.

Some of the enhanced features and key differentiators between SOS and other competitive business products include:

Free Integrated Local Backup - SOS offers SMBs more than just online, offsite access to data, enabling a complete local backup suite where businesses can securely back up any file to any local medium, whether it’s an external hard drive, a local network connection, a flash memory stick or an iPod.

Unlimited Versioning and Archiving – SOS is a leader in protecting against the source of over 80% of data loss – accidental deletion. SOS assures businesses that every version of every file is kept forever, unlike other online backup systems that delete files from a backup when they are deleted from the computer – either intentionally or accidentally. With other providers of backup solutions that refuse to keep such files, all backups of that file will be deleted once a file is deleted from a drive, or a back up of the new version is stopped.

Physical Media Upload – SOS uniquely addresses the needs of SMBs that have large amounts of data and an unpredictable Internet connection which could take weeks to complete the initial backup of data. SOS offers an exclusive Physical Media Upload (PMU) service to avoid this frustration, providing businesses with an external drive in which to copy data. After SOS engineers transfer the data to business’ servers, future backups are quick and easy.

Global Roaming Access – SOS ensures that businesses will always be able to retrieve critical files by backing up data regularly to the SOS Backup Server Grid. This allows businesses to access data from any computer with a web browser, unlike other backup systems that will only restore to the same computer that created the backup.

Access Files with Your Mobile Phone – Addressing the increasing use of mobile devices, SOS enables users of an iPhone® or other WAP-enabled mobile phone (including the BlackBerry®) to access data from anywhere and at anytime.

“SOS understands that when it comes to the needs of small businesses, online backup is invaluable, and we’ve taken steps to deliver a solution that offers SMBs more features designed to improve accessibility, flexibility and security of their data,” said Ken Shaw, CEO of SOS Online Backup.  “Our latest multi-destination, multi-schedule enhancements assure SMBs that all of the data their business depends on is completely protected and readily accessible.”

SOS’s online backup solution is a software-as-a-service billed at a low monthly subscription, making their advanced data protection affordable for any small to mid-sized business.

While physical damage to property may be unavoidable, data loss isn’t. It’s important for small business owners to take the necessary precautions to ensure their computer systems, filled with valuable data, are properly backed-up offsite. SOS Online Backup, a global leader in online backup technology, recently published the findings of a study revealing that nearly 50 percent of small businesses do not back-up their data regularly. Losing databases, possibly amounting to years’ worth of financial, customer and other confidential information, as the result of a natural disaster could result in a bigger disaster – the failure of your small business.

According to the Institute for Business and Home Safety, an estimated 25 percent of businesses do not reopen following a major disaster. To ensure a small business does not end up in that bracket, small business owners must plan for disasters, regardless of whether or not they are forecasted.

While backing up data may not seem like a priority on a day-to-day basis, it can make a huge difference on whether or not your business can get back up on its feet if a natural disaster strikes. Backing up your computer system locally is not enough. If you have a lot of physical damage to your business, you may not be able to get to your local backup, or it may have been destroyed. This is why backing up your data continuously offsite is your safest and most secure option when it comes to protecting your data.

Small businesses put a lot of reliance on their computer and database systems. These systems usually hold vital information for daily operation such as financial data, customer data, product information, etc. All of the information stored in these systems is irreplaceable and necessary for the success of the business. Most of these systems have grown organically and have become essential to the running and organization of the business. Without properly backing up these systems, a natural disaster could wipe everything out – forcing any small business owner to have to pick up and start again from scratch.

“Small business owners must prepare for any and every situation they could encounter. Depending on location, your business may be more susceptible to different types of natural disasters. One of the more unfortunate stories coming out of Hurricane Katrina was the repeated story of business owners, who lost all their legal records from the calamity, going to their lawyers or their accountants who were retaining backup copies for them.  Of course, those lawyers and accountants were just as badly affected by the calamity as their clients, and in many cases decades worth of records were irretrievably lost” said Ken Shaw, Chief Technology Officer of SOS Online Backup. “Losing all of your data is a devastating situation, one that many small businesses never recover from. This is why it is so important to back up your data offsite regularly using online backup technology.”

Recent Study Conducted by SOS Online Backup Finds That Nearly Fifty Percent of Small Business Owners Don’t Back Up Their Data

Nearly Fifty Percent of Small Business Owners Don’t Back Up Their Data, Fewer than Ten Percent of Consumers Back Up Daily, According to SOS Online Backup.

Lack of back up shows that small businesses and consumers need to be more educated in the importance of backing up data.

Los Angeles, CALIFORNIA – May 06, 2009 – A recent study of small businesses and consumers conducted by SOS Online Backup, a global leader in online backup technology, reveals that small businesses and consumers are not frequently backing up their data – stating that “not having enough time” is a leading cause for the lack of back up.

According to SOS Online Backup’s study, nearly 50 percent of small businesses are not backing up their data on a daily basis. The study also revealed that while over 90 percent of small businesses say they have a policy to back up daily, only half of them actually do back up their data that frequently.

The survey showed that the businesses that do back up spend a considerable amount of time each day safeguarding their data. Of those that backup daily, 64 percent of small businesses spend at least 15 minutes backing up their data, which totals almost 65 hours per annum (or nearly 8 business days). In many small businesses, where employees are 100 percent utilized, time taken to perform backup operations results in reduced productivity in other core areas of the business.

“Every day new ways of creating digital content are developed and as more and more of our lives are digitized, the protection of that data becomes all too important,” said Ken Shaw, Chief Technology Officer of SOS Online Backup.

Through its study, SOS Online Backup has also found that even among the small businesses surveyed (businesses between 1 and 15 staff) 31 percent of businesses are spending between $500 to $2500 per year on their current backup operations and an additional 19 percent of those surveyed are spending more than $2500 per annum on their existing backup systems, when fully costed to account for the loss of productivity and labor.

"While it’s not surprising that small businesses and consumers don’t perform daily backup operation and are spending too much on backup systems, it’s hard to believe that companies aren’t aware of the value and ease of online backup technologies,” further stated Shaw. “Overall, the results from the study conducted by SOS Online Backup clearly demonstrate the importance of protecting your data effectively and quickly, and the wide-spread need for simple but powerful backup systems that can automate the task of protecting business data.”

BitDefender and SOS Online Backup announced a partnership to deliver integrated online backup and recovery of essential data

BitDefender and SOS Online Backup on Tuesday announced a partnership to deliver integrated online backup and recovery of essential data.

Called BitDefender Online Backup, the service will use SOS's technology to back up a user's files to a redundant global network of datacenters. SOS's ShrinkRAP technology reduces transfer time by transmitting only the difference when a file changes. In addition to significantly reducing bandwidth after the initial backup, this technology lets users recover an unlimited number of previous versions for each file.

Ken Shaw, director of engineering for SOS, pointed out that BitDefender Online Backup will include a number of advanced features not found in other integrated backup systems like those of Norton 360 or Windows Live OneCare. The BitDefender product will include live continuous monitoring for changes and will be able to back up open files. Where other services generally delete files from storage at a fixed time after deletion from the source computer, BitDefender will archive files indefinitely, until actively deleted by the user. It retains an unlimited number of previous versions, so if you find that an important file was corrupted you can go back to last week's version.

More significantly, the service will include an option for uploading physical media and recovering them, too. In other words, rather than attempting to upload multiple gigabytes of data in one huge initial backup session, a user can send the data on a DVD or drive. If you need to recover the entire backup set BitDefender can FedEx it to you.

Backed-up files are available from any Internet-based computer, so you can use the backup for remote access. It's also possible to configure individual files or folders to share with others, whether or not they have an account with BitDefender or SOS.

Carmen Măierean, a product manager for BitDefender's desktop products, explained that this backup technology will be integrated into BitDefender's flagship security suite starting with the next version, BitDefender Total Security 2009, available later this year. Business customers can choose standalone backup or utilize the backup solution as part of an integrated business suite. The business version supports any number of users and can easily add storage capacity as needed.

Eventually the backup/recovery and antivirus elements of the program will be fully integrated, according to Vincent Hwang, Bit Defender's global director of product management. If a virus has damaged a file beyond the product's ability to disinfect it, BitDefender will simply recover a non-infected version from backup. The precise amount of storage offered with purchase of BitDefender Total Security 2009 hasn't yet been determined, but it's unlikely to be less than the 2 Gbytes that comes with Norton 360. Naturally, users will be able to purchase additional storage as needed.

CyberDefender and SOS form partnership to distribute CyberDefender Online Backup

New partnership will add additional features for CyberDefender customers protecting against the threat of loss or corruption of valuable data files.

Los Angeles, CA – September 24, 2007 - Security software developer, CyberDefender Corporation (www.cyberdefender.com) (OTC BB: CYDE) today announced that it has entered into a partnership with SOS Online Backup (www.sosonlinebackup.com), an industry leader in online backup technology. As a result of this partnership, CyberDefender customers who take advantage of this service will be protected against file loss or deletion due to harmful Internet attacks.

CyberDefender has already been offering online backup powered by SOS Online Backup. SOS Online Backup provides CyberDefender customers with the latest in online, offsite backup technology and will allow users to properly protect their data quickly, easily, and inexpensively. SOS’s innovative technology backs up files to a global network of datacenters powered by SOS Servers. The data is compressed using SOS ShrinkRAPTM delta compression prior to transfer ensuring only binary changes made to the files are sent over the network, significantly reducing bandwidth consumption, and allowing the user to store an unlimited number of versions of any given file.

“These new contributions will help to reassure our customers that they are protected against significant damage of an Internet attack. We are pleased to offer a service to our clients that is not only beneficial, but also easy and affordable to use. The process of backing up files online can be a very expensive and time consuming process, but SOS Online Backup’s ground-breaking technology makes this essential task accessible to the average computer user. With this partnership, we are not only demonstrating our commitment to protect our users from harmful modern computer threats, but we are also easing the worries of lost files and important documents in the event that an attack does happen,” said Alan Wallace, Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications at CyberDefender Corporation.

Commenting on the partnership, Ken Shaw, director of SOS technical operations said “We are eager to begin working with CyberDefender in this initiative. The combination of our technologically advanced software and CyberDefender’s exceptional threat protection program will be extremely beneficial to CyberDefender users.”

(PRWEB) February 27, 2006 -- SOS Online Backup, an industry leader in online backup technology, announced today the availability of their SOS Online Backup service for consumers and SOHOs, delivering peace of mind for as little as $1 per week.

"Ever lost a file? Painful isn’t it? That puts you in the 90% of Americans who regularly lose data either at home or at work. This is needlessly lost data. The SOS Online Backup system easily allows you to backup files, folders or entire computers to the company’s network of backup servers and then access and share those files anywhere in the world by simply using your favorite Web Browser, or using the SOS Online Backup client.

"With ten times the features of a USB key, but at half the price, whether it is Hurricane Katrina, a power outage or human error that involves an accidental tap of the delete key, a reliable online backup solution will ensure you can keep your data safe and accessible", explains Ken Shaw, President and CEO of SOS Online Backup.

Unlike its competitors, SOS Online Backup offers a well rounded online backup solution with important features that set it apart from the competition. Privacy protection, encryption, unlimited file versioning, advanced designed-for-dialup compression, advanced built-in file search, and online browser-based file recovery and file sharing are just some of the features available at very affordable rates with plans starting at little more than $1 per week. SOS Online Backup’s UltraSafe security technology means that not even SOS engineers can access or view user’s data -- delivering complete data security.

The SOS Online Backup service provides data protection for customers, whether they are SMEs, SOHOs, professionals at home, students or anyone with electronic files to be protected.

SOS Online Backup brings Big-Business IT best practice to the little guy.

This dynamic new product is creating quite a buzz, as noted in both PC Authority and Atomic Magazines. Identified as incredibly easy to use, SOS Online Backup, a true industry leader is poised to offer integrated features, functionality and reliability at prices well below the competition.

But is online backup really that important? Studies show 90% of small businesses intend to backup daily, but only 51% actually do. With a hard drive failing every 15 seconds, an entire business can come to a standstill without a reliable cost-effective online backup solution. "We all get car insurance without thinking -- and yet if we crash our car -- it can be fixed or replaced. What would happen if you lost all your emails? All your financial records? What would happen if you lost your MYOB or Quicken or QuickBooks database? Over 60% of businesses who experience such loss are out of business within 6 months. Why? Because most people do not backup properly -- either because it takes too much time and effort, or the systems required cost too much. For those businesses that do backup -- the effort is usually inadequate -- time intensive -- costly in terms of staff time -- rarely done daily and rarely taken offsite", further states Ken Shaw, President and CEO.

The solution? SOS Online Backup. Automatic, secure, set-and-forget. Zero fuss. Delivering a better quality of backup service for a lower price than any other backup technology.

Established in 2001, SOS Online Backup has given thousands of businessdes and home-based consumers the opportunity to resume normal operation once a catastrophe hits, thanks to instant online recovery and the ability to access critical files from anywhere in the world using just a webbrowser.
