- Over head space. SOS requires over head space for the backup set, because SOS using a caching system which will create a local copy of the files in the backup set for incremental backups. If you have a backup set of 10GB, SOS requires at least 75-80% space on the hard drive for caching. If you do not have enough space on your C drive, you can redirect the cache to another drive that has more space. You have an option in the program to do it. Go to “Advanced” > Options > Folders.
- SOS requires that the program be installed under an administrator account. So make sure you are logged in as an administrator on the computer.
- Make sure that your windows task scheduler service is running and has no issues, since SOS needs the windows task scheduler for starting up your backups.
- Some of SOS’s advanced Windows integration features, like drag and drop and backing up network drives cannot be used under certain circumstances. The most common is if you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7 and have the UAC security settings turned on. If you would like to use these SOS features, you need to disable the UAC. To find the UAC settings in Vista or Windows 7 open the start menu, and in the search bar type ‘user account control’.
Make sure the slider is moved down to “Never notify” and then click on OK and reboot the computer, (This image is for Windows 7 operating systems.). - When setting up your backup set, make sure you do not select Program files and Windows folders since these are system folders and have application files that are not required for backups.
- If you plan on logging off the computer when a backup is scheduled to run, do not select files from the network drive, rather select the files for backup using the UNC path for those files and then right click on the file/folder and select “Protect with SOS”.
- Make sure your Windows OS is up to date with all the latest Microsoft updates.

Exclude these processes in your Antivirus/AntiSpyware program Realtime Protection, also add these files to the firewall exception list.
